This is the first in a four-book series; if you love Barbara's books, because of their clear black and white photos or their direct, no-fluff instructions, you may want to own them all. In all reality, though, the 500 patterns in this book alone will keep you busy for a long time, beginner knitter or experienced.

From the simple beginnings with Knit-Purl combinations - you'll start with stockinette stitch, garter stitch, seed stitch and so on - through Ribbings, Color Changes, Slip-Stitch patterns, Laces, Twist Stitches and more, you'll never again be at a loss for an idea for a stitch.

In Barbara's words herself: "There is something in every human soul which seeks to create a thing of beauty, given any sort of opportunity and materials to do so....Combinations are the key to true artistry in knitting....Thus, the more patterns you learn,...the closer you come to the true creation of beauty."

So with the aid of Barbara's treasury of patterns, knit on, following in the footsteps of previous generations of knitters, or maybe more correctly, in the patterns of the multitude of hands who have created beauty before you.

Be fearless in embracing new patterns; take heart in the fact that all 500 of these patterns require knowledge only of knitting, purling, yarn over and using a cable needle. If you can follow directions, and hold a pen and write, you can knit these patterns.

Don't simply read this book, pick up yarn and needles and create beauty. Jot down notes in the margins, reminders of projects you knit with these lovely patterns.
