Book Review: "The Friday Night Knitting Club" By Kate Jacobs

A motley crew of strangers gather in Walker & Daughter's shop on Friday nights. Some can't start a knitting project, some can't finish one. Some drop stitches, others can't make a buttonhole. None of them realize their lives will be changed forever.

All the characters in "The Friday Night Knitting Club" are drawn to the circle for different reasons. Georgia Walker starts her knitting business as a last resort before returning to her parents' home as a pregnant single mom. She touches everyones' lives with her own brand of strength, independence, imagination and perseverance.

Georgia is a bit aloof from the knitting group at first, but eventually is drawn into the circle by the very nature of female relationships. Their sharing and caring, while each retain a private secret, is what "knits" them together. As Georgia herself finally realizes, "everyone has to knit while they're here...But not every person has to use yarn."

It's the same for you as the reader. You don't need to be a knitter to find personal meaning and inspiration. There are plenty of lessons embedded seamlessly in the many themes running through this book. Perhaps the lifestyle or personality of a particular character will resonate with you and offer a window into your own soul. Maybe it's the importance of family, or the value of women's friendships that will inspire you to discover similar themes in your own life. Perhaps you will be drawn either by knitting or another craft to "create something that will hold a piece of your soul."

If you open to the multitude of possibilities you will find parts of the members of The Friday Night Knitting Club within yourself.

"Every knitter stitches with love....in a world that doesn't need homemade anything...That's when we need homemade everything."

And that's when we need this book.
