Book Review: "Weekend Knitting", By Melanie Falick

With our hectic modern schedules, often the most welcome knitting patterns are those that can be knit up quickly and easily in spare moments, hence the name, "Weekend Knitting".

Life is not as it used to be. For many women the thought of being a stay-at-home mom is just a dream. Most men feel the burden of being the main money-earner for their families and trudge off to long hours of work every day.

Knitting is a relaxing retreat for both sexes, but you may not think you have time for knitting an afghan or a man's XL sweater. Think simple, then think again.

Large needles and a simple simple simple pattern can make all the difference. Or maybe knitting a lap blanket, or a vest, can fit into your schedule. You may want to start teensy, with an egg cozy (you read that right) or finger puppets. Perhaps knitting little things for the littlest of people suits you.

Whatever your lifestyle or pleasure, you can find something to suit your knitting mood in "Weekend Knitting". It's all about the unwinding from a hectic week; the joy of watching your hands create, one stitch at a time; the rhythm of the needles clicking quietly, soothing mind and spirit; the joy of finishing, appreciating and being appreciated.

I'm not "in love" with the patterns themselves, which are too simplistic for me as a veteran knitter. However, they have value as starting points for my own designs. For example, I don't find the knitted doll pattern very appealing, but my imagination soars with ideas such as knitting it with chenille, trying different colors and clothing, using mohair for hair, and so on. I've got a great idea for finger puppets, and the knitted gameboards look like fun...and I appereciate Melanie's bonus touch of warmth: the lists of books and movies with references to knitting, and the recipes.

To me, the ultimate "girl night" would be watching movies as we knit and munch on cookies. Simple pleasures, yes - and oh so necessary in this fast-paced world. Soup, secrets, the soft clicking of knitting needles. The perfect knitting weekend.
