Book Review: "Chic Knits For Young Chicks", By Sarah Paulin

A great book for beginners - knitting supplies and techniques explained, and simple projects such as scarves, shrugs, ponchos, belts, caps, purses and accessories. Perfect projects with a young twist - lots of bangles, glitter, tassels and fringe.

This is a knitting book for young knitters written by a young knitter, but it's perfect for all ages. There are 133 pages of patterns, photos, and tips, but pages 7-33 are all about supplies and techniques. Nothing is assumed: neither the difference between a ball, skein and hank; how to read a knitting pattern; nor how to make a slipknot or fix a dropped stitch.

So this book is great for beginners, but not just because it explains every step so well. "Chic Knits for Young Chicks" also shows you how to knit with an attitude; no simple boring scarf knitting here. Sarah shows you how to combine yarns, textures and colors to create a scarf with spunk and style, and then she shows you how to take your scarf and turn it into a shrug or poncho.

I love how she shows you how functional and funky "parts of things" can be. Knit what seems to be the body of a sweater in the round, and it becomes a tube skirt or top. Knit two sleeves, also in the round, and you've got "arm warmers". Tubes knit for each hand, with absolutely no shaping or other 'fancy stuff' and you've got hand warmers. Knit the beginning of a cap and you have ear warmers, or, a headband scarf.

This creative teen taught a grandma-seasoned-knitter something new, too - I'd never heard of "thrumming" before I read her pattern for a "thrummed tea cozy". Sweet.

There's a to-the-point Table of Contents and all-inclusive index, making it easy to find each of the 39 patterns. Metric equivalents anyone? They're here.

Along with fuzzy, felted, pom-poms, sparkles, beads and fringe to add enough glam and attitude to any teen's wardrobe.
