Explanation of many of the outstanding features of this bookstore, online and in Portland, Oregon.
Powell's Bookstore in Portland, Oregon is my favorite bookstore, bar none. It's huge, and has a large selection of used books (read this as "more books for your money"). There are also textbooks, rare books, and much much more. You can even sell them your used books online! Their website has an open, relaxed feel to it and is easy to navigate. Lots of categories, and a bazillion subcategories, easy to find exactly what you want. Right on the front page is their bestseller list, updated hourly. There are links to the numerous events (book signings and readings) at the bookstore, as well as online events (contests, subscriptions, blogs, and great deals).
You'll find signed books and interviews with authors, author essays, and some very favorable press reviews:
- Forbes Magazine's "Best of the Web";
- Seattle Times - ""The point is Powell's probably is the world's greatest bookstore. It is a place of staggering ambition, hidden in the very humble wrapper of a worn-out warehouse. Any library we seek tax money to build ought to measure up to Powell's or it isn't worth it."
- Details.com - "Call it Amazon with a soul. Based in Portland, Oregon, Powell's offers as sizable a selection as its online and mega-store competitors, and its blogs keep you better informed about literary options than any "personalized" recommendations list."
I like that, "Amazon with a soul." Amazon is a last resort for me. I get so frustrated on their website because I never fail to get lost. Even just on one page...
And Powell's makes it a delight for affiliates like me, I have my own bookshelf there, virtually speaking. With one link I can show people every book that I recommend.
If you live in Portland, check out their calendar of events. If like me you live too far away, check out the blogs and subscribe to one of their newsletters - you'll be entered into a drawing for $250 worth of books!
