kimono knitted with Calmer yarnI don't like knitting with cotton, so it means something when I say, I've found a cotton blend yarn to love.

Calmer from Rowan is a worsted weight, 75% cotton and 25% acrylic, plied yarn in pastels as well as bolder solid colors. Calmer would be perfect for baby garments, lightweight sweaters, scarves, afghans, throws, or anything you can just wrap yourself up in.

Calmer has the tension of DK but because of the elasticity in it, you knit it on bigger needles. The feel is soft and luxurious, it's hard to believe it's cotton.

Perfect for any pattern calling for aran weight cotton yarn, Calmer has great stitch definition. Calmer has the best of all worlds, for a knitter and for a wearer. It's soft, breathable, has a touch of stretch, and can be considered a luxury yarn. When was the last time you said that about humble cotton?

You'll need approximately 10 skeins for a long-sleeved medium-sized women's sweater (more if you choose a complex patterns), which translates into somewhere around $110-$120.00. This sounds a bit pricey for cotton, which normally is less expensive than animal fibers.

Calmer is a great yarn for spring and summer knitting, or for any time of year if you just don't like bulky garments or are allergic to wool. There is a magical, mysterious quality to this yarn. You can knit it up on #8 needles and there is enough stretch that your garment will hold its shape. Though you're knitting on a larger needle, your stitches are smaller (thanks to that same elasticity).

The yarn itself doesn't unravel, so knitting with cotton no longer means splitting stitches. There is greater stitch definition than with other cotton yarns, and your finished product is lighter in weight. So if you don't like to wear handknits because of the bulk or weight, Calmer is for you.

I am not a skinny woman. When I design knit garments for myself, I use style secrets to make me appear thinner. I'd pretty much given up on aran knits, even though I love to knit Celtic knots and texture, lots of texture! They just make me look too big.

Calmer is the new love of my knitting life. I'll be adventuring into the world of texture once again.

Here are the official stats, but they're deceptive; I knit with size 8 needles and loved it, it knit up so fast, yet is still so much more delicate than the cotton sweater I'm wearing.

Stitches: 5.25/inch / Needle: 7 Content: 75% cotton 25% acrylic microfiber Yardage: 175 / Care: hand wash, cold water Category: worsted weight yarn

Calmer feels so good, and is so hard to describe, it's very different and lovely in so many ways. The only drawback is the price, but if you consider what you knit with it to be an "heirloom Italian knit", you'll be so very pleased.
